Modern digital technologies are regarded as the primary productive resource that determines the growth of social welfare in the new paradigm of world economic development. As a result of our constant change and adaptation to its internet culture, we now live in the digital age. Population growth fueled by technology improves our connectivity, financial inclusion, trade, and public services while also acting as a great equalizer. Many new technologies are intended to make it easier for people to communicate with one another; however, they have rendered traditional communication methods obsolete for people to become digital citizens. On the one hand, modern digital technologies have greatly facilitated communication. It provides many opportunities to meet new people through various social media platforms. Facebook and other websites have greatly contributed to real-time communication and access around the world, and are increasingly likely to create relationships with others across traditional cultural boundaries. Indeed, digital technologies give us the freedom to express ourselves through sharing thoughts and ideas and having an exciting world to obtain anything with just one tap of our screens.
Furthermore, there is no denying that technology is becoming increasingly important in the lives of today's generation. But what if this convenience will also lead us to inconvenience?
Cyberbullying, a multi-faced issue,
yet, have the intention of being one and the same which is meant to hurt people
and bring them harm. This kind of bullying involves the use of digital
communication tools such as the internet and cell phones. It can occur through
SMS, apps, texts, or social media, where many people can see it. Cyberbullying
includes sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone. In
short, it's all about embarrassment and humiliation. According to the bullying
statistics, the ones who most experience cyberbullying are teenagers because
nowadays teens are exposed to social media, which they use regularly. In fact,
over 80% of teenagers using cell phones don't know that they became prone to
that bullying. Consequently, we could say that cyberbullying is not a light
matter. It needs to be taken seriously as it does have a lot of dangerous
effects on the victim.
Other than that, cyberbullying also
tarnishes the image of a person. It hampers their reputation with the false
rumors spread about them. Everything on social media spreads like wildfire.
Moreover, people often question credibility. Thus, one false rumor destroys people’s lives. So,
what we could say is that it is not a joke; it is a serious problem that needs
prevention. We need to be aware of this kind of bullying because if we
experience it, it might affect and destroy our lives. It needs to be monitored
and put an end to.
There are various ways to tackle cyberbullying. We can implement them at individual levels as well as authoritative levels. First, always teach your children to never share personal information online. For instance, if you list your home address or phone number there, it will make you a potential target of cyberbullying easily. Second, avoid posting explicit photos of yourself online. Also, never discuss personal matters on social media. In other words, keep the information limited within your group of friends and family. Most importantly, never ever share your internet password and account details with anyone. Keep all this information to yourself alone. Be alert and do not click on mysterious links, they may be scams. In addition, parents must monitor their children’s online activities and limit their usage, teach their kids about cyberbullying and make them aware of what’s wrong and right.
Taking everything into account, cyberbullying
is not good, so we should do something. Awareness is the key to preventing
online harassment. As a youth, there are
a lot of ways to help, like being careful with what we say and post on social
media; "Think before you click," remember that. Social media is good
for all of us; you can see all kinds of things, but we must know our
limitations as users of it because cyberbullying is a crime, and the person who
does this should be punished, same as we should be aware and be always cautious
in every situation we are in. To prevent this kind of thing from happening,
there is a law called Republic Act # 10175, or the Cyberbullying Prevention
Act, which protects the victims of it. Nevertheless, be a responsible digital
citizen instead. Do not start a bad deed if you can’t bring yourself
accountable for it because as Germany Kent said, “There's no room for hate and violence in this world.
We must learn to be more kind, compassionate, and sympathetic to
humanity."
